Abstract : Regional planning objectives and activities such as policy formulation, development planning, monitoring, evaluation and impact assessment are information intensive processes. They require a highly developed computerized information system that really helps in developing the region. This paper aims at analyzing various theoretical frames and the basic outlines for developing regional planning information systems. Also, recent socio-technical approaches in systems design and a real experiment of developing an “Integrated Planning Information System” (IPIS) in Ethiopia are focused on.
